This draw was expected since the IRCC announced last week that the very first Express Entry draw specifically for those in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields would happen this week.
The IRCC also confirmed plans for another round of invitations this week, aiming to invite 1,500 healthcare workers to apply for permanent residence.
The most recent draw specifically targeting a certain category happened on June 28, last week. It invited 500 healthcare professionals who had a minimum CRS score of 476. So far in 2023, this has been the lowest CRS score in any Express Entry draw.

The IRCC also held an all-program draw on July 4, yesterday. This draw invited 700 candidates who had a minimum CRS score of 511. Such an all-program draw takes into account candidates from the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.

Eligibility for the STEM Occupations Category
To be eligible for the STEM occupations category, you must:
- Meet Express Entry Criteria: Qualify under one of the Express Entry programs, including the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class, or Federal Skilled Trades Program.
- Accumulate Work Experience: Within the past three years, have a minimum of six months of continuous work experience in one of the listed STEM occupations.
- Fulfill Additional Requirements: Meet all the specific requirements mentioned in the instructions for the category-based draw.
Is my CRS score still important?
According to the IRCC, during category-based invitation rounds, candidates in the Express Entry pool who meet the category requirements will be ranked, and those with the highest rankings will be invited to apply for permanent residence. Just like in a standard draw, eligible candidates will be ordered based on their CRS score. So, those with higher scores are still more likely to get an invitation.
Moreover, the IRCC will keep having regular all-program or program-specific draws. So, maintaining a high CRS score remains important to be considered for these draws.

What are Express Entry Draws?
Express Entry draws are held regularly, inviting candidates to apply for Canadian permanent residency.
