IOM’s Role in the Resettlement Effort

IOM has worked closely with the Government of Canada and other partners to safely resettle Afghans in the country since August 2021. The UN agency has played a crucial role in the resettlement process, including coordinating resettlement flights, assisting with the application process, and providing pre-departure health assessments and orientation sessions to prepare Afghans for their new lives in Canada. IOM has also facilitated their travel to their new home communities around the country.

António Vitorino, IOM Director-General, highlighted the importance of ensuring the safe and dignified resettlement of refugees worldwide, adding that IOM is proud to be part of Canada’s efforts to provide a new home for tens of thousands of vulnerable Afghans. IOM has collaborated with the Government of Canada in the past to resettle Syrian and Iraqi refugees, and it will continue to work with its global partners to support Canada’s pledge to welcome at least 40,000 Afghans.

Canada’s Commitment to Resettlement

Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, praised the dedication of the government’s partners, including IOM, in ensuring that vulnerable Afghans can travel safely to Canada.

Sean Fraser, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada (IRCC) emphasized that the resettlement of 30,000 Afghans is a significant achievement, given that it is one of the largest and most challenging resettlement efforts in Canada’s history. The programme has also resettled members of marginalized groups such as disabled persons, women, and girls, and LGBTIQ+ people.

Preparing Afghans for Their New Lives in Canada

IOM’s pre-departure orientation sessions provide Afghans with essential information on Canada’s laws and regulations, as well as guidance on how to access essential services such as healthcare, education, and employment. The orientation sessions also help Afghans to learn about Canada’s culture and way of life, including the country’s climate and customs. The UN agency also provides pre-departure health assessments to ensure that Afghans are healthy enough to travel and start their new lives in Canada.

Collaboration Among NGOs and Organizations

The resettlement of Afghan refugees in Canada is the result of collaboration among various NGOs and organizations operating in the region. The success of the resettlement effort demonstrates the importance of collaboration among these entities, as well as the resilience of refugees who have had to flee their homes due to conflict and insecurity. The UN agency’s collaboration with the Government of Canada and other partners has helped to ensure that the resettlement process is carried out in a safe and dignified manner, with the needs of refugees at the forefront.

The Importance of Resettlement Efforts

Resettlement efforts such as the one in Canada provide a lifeline for refugees who have had to flee their homes due to conflict and insecurity. The resettlement process not only provides refugees with a new home but also helps them to rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient. Resettlement also helps to alleviate the burden on host countries that are often overwhelmed by the sheer number of refugees seeking protection.

Conclusion

The resettlement of more than 30,000 Afghan refugees in Canada is a significant achievement, and it highlights the importance of collaboration among various entities to provide a safe and dignified future for vulnerable populations. IOM has played a crucial role in ensuring that the resettlement process is carried out in a safe and dignified manner, and its pre-departure orientation sessions have helped Afghans to prepare for their new lives in Canada. The success of Canada’s resettlement effort demonstrates the resilience of refugees and the importance of providing them with a lifeline to rebuild their lives. The international community must continue to support resettlement efforts and work together to provide a better future for refugees around the world.
