- Han Dong released a statement on the morning of March 27, 2023
- Han Dong will be seeking Legal Action against GlobalNews and Corus Entertainment
Ottawa, March 27, 2023: In the aftermath of the allegations made against him, Han Dong, a former Liberal MP from the Toronto area, has announced his decision to leave the Liberal caucus and sit as an independent member in the Canadian Parliament.
The allegations stem from a report by Global News, which claimed that Dong had advised a senior Chinese diplomat to delay the release of two Canadian citizens, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, who were being held in China at the time. Dong denies the allegations and has vowed to clear his name.
In a statement released to the media, Dong expressed his concern that his presence in the Liberal caucus may be viewed as a conflict of duty, and that he did not want to interrupt the business of the government as an independent investigation pursues the facts of this matter. He stated that he would sit as an independent so that the bills of Parliament are not interrupted, and so that he can work to clear his name and present the truth to the Canadian people.
In a Media release by the constituency office of Han Dong this morning, Han Dong confirmed that he has retained a lawyer to seek legal action against Globalnews and Corus Entertainment. MP Dong also shared his media release through his twitter handle.

MP Dong shed light on the struggles of his father in China as their family left for Canada in 1989. In the letter, Dong denied the allegations and said, “I voted in the support of a Public Inquiry on foreign interference to demonstrate to my family, colleagues and constituents that I have nothing to hide, and to re-mind my false accusers and Global News that the truth will always come out in the end. I support the mandate of the Independent Special Rapporteur, the Right Honourable David Johnston, and I am willing to meet with him and provide any information that he requests.”
This is a developing story…
