The new Canada Carbon Tax Rebate payment for 2024 started rolling out to eligible Canadians on April 15, 2024.
People living in these provinces—Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador—a family of four could receive up to $1,800 through the Canada Carbon Rebate for the 2024-25 period.
On February 14, 2024, the Department of Finance announced increased payments for the Canada Carbon Tax Rebate 2024, which was previously known as the Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP).
The department also provided details about the payment dates and amounts for the Canada Carbon Tax Rebate 2024 based on the province you live in.
The Canada Carbon Rebate, formerly called the Climate Action Incentive Payment, is how the government gives money back to households in provinces that follow the federal backstop scheme for carbon pollution pricing.
The name was changed to Canada Carbon Rebate to make it clear that it’s about returning money from carbon pricing to Canadian households, according to the Finance Ministry.
The federal gasoline levy is applied in provinces that ask for it or don’t have a carbon pricing system that meets federal standards.
The money collected from the gasoline charge goes back to the province where it was collected.

Who can get the Canada Carbon Tax Rebate?
To qualify for the Canada Carbon Tax Rebate (CCR), you need to be a resident of Canada the month before getting the payment and a resident of a CCR province on the first day of the payment month. You must also meet one of the following conditions:
- Be at least 19 years old when the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) makes the payment.
OR
- If you’re under 19, you can qualify if you have or had a spouse or common-law partner, OR if you are or were a parent living with your child.
Why does the Carbon Tax Rebate differ in Atlantic provinces?
The rebate amounts in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador are adjusted based on estimated fuel charge earnings in 2024–25 instead of 2023–24. This adjustment is made because households in these provinces rely more on home heating oil.
In other provinces where the federal fuel price applies (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and New Brunswick), the Canada Carbon Rebates have increased.
