Study Permit Applications Projection for 2024
Immigration Minister, Marc Miller announced that they aim to approve 235,600 new study permits in 2024. Additionally, there’s a cap of 392,667 for new study permit applications, excluding certain groups like primary and secondary school students and master’s or doctoral degree students. This cap is based on a 60% approval rate.
The minister also shared a detailed province-wise provincial attestation letter and study permit approval allocation for 2024. In total, Canada plans to approve around 485,000 study permits for the year, which includes approximately 97,000 study permit extensions for students already in Canada.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) expects to get 606,000 study permit applications in 2024, including extensions and other types.
They’re capping the total number of applications at 606,000 for all types of study permits, like for primary and secondary school students and those pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees.
About 392,667 applications are reserved for new study permits, not including those for primary and secondary school students or master’s or doctoral degree students.
In January, Minister Marc Miller announced a new cap on international students. The official news from IRCC said that people studying for master’s and doctoral degrees, and those in elementary and secondary education, wouldn’t be affected by the cap.
But now, it looks like IRCC has decided to cap all types of study permit applications.
Province-Wise Study Permit Allocations For 2024
Here are the numbers of study permit allocations and how many study permits are likely to be approved for study permit applications, except for those in primary or high school and those pursuing a master’s or doctorate.
Canada Study Permit Capping Model for 2024
In 2024, Canada has put a cap on the number of international students allowed to study here. This limit matches the number of study permits that expire this year. So, only as many new international students can come to Canada as the ones leaving.
The goal for 2024 is to have 485,000 study permits issued.
To decide how many permits each province and territory gets, IRCC looked at their population sizes. They allocated 393,000 study permit applications accordingly.
In 2024, some provinces and territories will have more students than in 2023, while others will have fewer.
The IRCC changed how many international students each province gets. If a province has more students in 2024 than in 2023, its growth is limited to 10%.
For provinces getting fewer international students in 2024, the IRCC adjusted their allocation to soften the impact in the first year and help with immigration goals.
Provinces with approval rates below 60% got extra study permit allocations to meet their targets by 2024.
In total, about 552,000 study permit applications have been given to provinces and territories across Canada.
These changes mean there will be around 292,000 accepted study permits, which is 28% less than in 2023 for those affected by the cap.
Study Permit Allocations For Ontario In 2024
In 2024, Ontario has been given 235,000 study permit spots. It’s expected that about 141,000 of these permits will be approved, assuming a 60% approval rate. This count doesn’t include permits for primary and secondary school students or for master’s or doctoral degrees.
Processing Time For Study Permits
For study permit applications from outside Canada, it usually takes around 11 weeks. If you’re applying from within Canada, it takes about 10 weeks. And if you’re extending a study permit, it typically takes around 77 days. These timeframes are based on the latest information from IRCC.
