        What is an Ontario Health Card?

        An Ontario Health Card, also known as the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card, is a government-issued identification that validates your eligibility for health coverage in Ontario. The health card allows you to access a variety of healthcare services, including visits to a doctor or a hospital.

        Why Do You Need an Ontario Health Card?

        You need an Ontario Health Card because it:

        • Validates your eligibility for public healthcare services in Ontario.
        • Is needed to apply for many other services and identification cards in Canada.

        Key takeaway: It’s essential for every Ontario resident to have an Ontario Health Card to access Publicly funded health services.

        Eligibility Criteria for Ontario Health Card

        Before you start your application process, you need to ensure that you meet the OHIP eligibility requirements. You are eligible if you:

        • Are a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or among one of the newcomer groups to Canada eligible for OHIP as set out in Ontario’s Health Insurance Act ;
        • Are physically present in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period;
        • Are physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after establishing residency in the province;
        • Make Ontario your primary place of residence.

        Understanding your eligibility is the first step to successfully apply for your Ontario Health Card.

        5. Live in Ontario with a valid work permit and have been working full-time here for at least 6 months.
          1. If this is you, your spouse and kids might also get OHIP.
          2. Even if your work permit has expired but you still have a “maintained status”, you may qualify (call ServiceOntario to check).
        6. Have a valid work permit under the Live-in Caregiver Program.
        7. Have a valid work permit under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program.

        Applying for Ontario Health Card: A Step-by-Step Guide

        Before visiting a ServiceOntario center, make sure you have the necessary documents ready. These include:

        1. Proof of Canadian citizenship or immigration status: Provide original documents such as a Canadian birth certificate, Canadian passport, Certificate of Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Resident Card, or Confirmation of Permanent Residence.
        2. Proof of residency in Ontario: Bring original documents that establish your Ontario residency, such as a driver’s license, lease agreement, utility bill, or bank statement. The document should display your name and residential address in Ontario.
        3. Proof of identity: Carry original identification documents that confirm your identity, such as a valid driver’s license, passport, or birth certificate.
        4. For Temporary Foreign Workers: Foreign workers applying for OHIP coverage must present their work permit as well as provide documentation confirming their full-time employment in Ontario for a period of at least 6 months.

        Step 2: Visit your local ServiceOntario center

        Step 3: Complete the Registration for Ontario Health Insurance Coverage form

        At the ServiceOntario center, request and fill out the Registration for Ontario Health Insurance Coverage form. Ensure that you provide accurate information, as any discrepancies may delay your application process.

        Step 4: Submit your form and documents

        Once you have completed the form and gathered your documents, approach the service counter at the ServiceOntario center. Hand in your completed form along with the original documents for verification.

        Step 5: Get your photo taken

        After submitting your documents, the ServiceOntario staff will take your photo for your health card. This photo will be printed on your official Ontario Health Card.

        Step 6: Receive your health card

        After your application is processed and approved, you will receive a temporary health card on the spot. Your permanent health card will be mailed to you at the address provided on your application form. The processing time for receiving your permanent health card is typically four to six weeks, although it may take longer during peak periods.

        Remember to keep your health card safe and notify ServiceOntario if your address changes.

        By following these steps and providing accurate information and documents, you’ll be on your way to obtaining your Ontario Health Card and accessing essential healthcare services in Ontario.
